A 40-foot high-cube container typically holds around 600 electric scooters. Many importers spend weeks negotiating the FOB price, believing that another five dollars saved per unit will decide whether the shipment is profitable.

In reality, FOB is only one line on the spreadsheet. Whether a container makes money comes down to three things: the true landed cost, how quickly it sells, and how long your capital stays tied up. Those are the numbers worth calculating before placing an order.

FOB is only the starting point

FOB tells you what the factory charges. It does not tell you what the scooters actually cost to put on your warehouse shelf.

A realistic landed cost also includes:

  • Sea freight and insurance
  • Import duty and VAT
  • Customs clearance and inland transport
  • Local compliance or registration costs where required in your market
  • Financing costs while production and shipping are underway

A supplier with the lowest FOB price is not always the supplier with the lowest total cost. If you are comparing manufacturers, compare landed cost per unit, not just the quotation. For a broader checklist on vetting a factory before the first order, see How to Choose a Reliable Electric Scooter Manufacturer in China.

The fastest-selling container usually wins

Imagine two importers ordering exactly the same model at exactly the same landed cost. One sells the container in two months. The other takes eight.

The purchase price is identical, but the business result is not. One has already recovered the cash and is preparing the next order. The other still has money sitting in the warehouse.

Inventory turnover often has a bigger impact on profitability than negotiating another few dollars off the purchase price.

Timing matters too. A container arriving before the selling season can sell at full price. The same container arriving months later may end up discounted simply because the market has moved on.

The costs that do not appear on the quotation

Some of the biggest costs only become visible after the container arrives: warranty repairs, slow spare-parts supply, units waiting in the workshop, and the last few pallets that seem to stay in the warehouse forever.

These rarely show up when buyers compare quotations, yet they often decide whether the first container leads to a second. That is one reason many importers now look beyond specifications alone and pay more attention to serviceability. We covered this in Why Stability Beats Price: The After-Sales Case for Quick-Release Design, where faster repairs measurably cut warranty labor and downtime.

Think like an importer, not a buyer

Successful importers rarely evaluate 600 scooters as individual products. They evaluate one container as a business project:

  • How quickly will the cash come back?
  • How much inventory will still be sitting in six months?
  • How much time and money will after-sales consume?

Those questions usually matter more than the last few dollars negotiated on the FOB price.

This is one reason we keep the D01 as an EU-ready, in-stock model built around a quick-release service design. Faster delivery and simpler repairs do not just improve the product, they improve the economics of the entire container.

FAQ

How many electric scooters fit in a 40HQ container?
Around 600 units, depending on carton dimensions and how the scooter folds.

What matters more, FOB price or landed cost?
For importers, landed cost is the more meaningful number. It includes freight, duty, VAT, clearance, and other costs beyond the factory price.

Why does inventory turnover matter?
Faster sell-through means capital returns sooner, which reduces financing cost and lets you place the next order earlier.
